The Terrarium Museum Stained Glass TerrariumsVictorian Conservatories
Nothing could better represents that wonderful era of Grand Elegance then the Conservatory. The desire to surround themselves with the most exotic tropical plants from around the world, in a climate that would normally be hostile to them, led Englishmen in the late 19th Century to construct these magnificent climate controlled greenhouses.
Living under acres and acres of glass, plants collected from six continents and every corner of the British Empire, could be enjoyed, cultivated, studied, and propagated. From every ecosystem plants were gathered, and were given their preferred environment. The hot tropic grassland, humid rainforests, arid deserts, and even barren alpine hills were recreated inside, while protected from the vagaries of English weather. It was in these surroundings that the seeds of modern horticulture were sown.
These Victorian Terrarium designs are inspired by those magnificent architectural structures. They bring a touch of the elegance of that bygone era to life in smaller forms, more appropriate to today's decorating environment.
